There are so many aspects to decorating your home, but there’s one specific area that tends to get the standard treatment: your walls.

It’s true that we’re starting to get more creative with paint and wallpaper, but beyond updating the wall itself, we’ve been left pretty disappointed with basic wall decor trends. However, the gallery wall is one decorating approach that is getting a seriously modern update - and we’re into it.

What is a Gallery Wall?

A gallery wall is a wall that is decorated with a collection of prints, art, photographs, or three-dimensional objects in order to create a cohesive statement.

Though they originally started as a way to display a photo collection, they’ve evolved into a more modern form of decor, incorporating textiles and sculptural pieces in order to reflect your personal taste, your inspirations, and your memories.

Why We Love Gallery Walls

Gallery walls are taking over Pinterest boards and interiors Instagram accounts, and it’s easy to see why.

First off, they’re adaptable. No matter what kind of interiors style you have, from farmhouse to vintage, bohemian to contemporary, you can incorporate a gallery wall that feels 100% you. In the same vein, it doesn’t matter what size wall you decided to turn into a gallery wall. A small wall with three pieces looks just as put together as a large one with ten.

Another incredible feature of a gallery wall is that they fill space. For those of us who are decor-challenged, it can be intimidating to make a large room feel like home. Filling the blank space with a gallery wall will add life to your room, and fill up an area that could otherwise feel cold and empty.

Finally, no two gallery walls are the same (unless you’re purchasing an entire set off of a website and recreating the example photo. We don’t recommend that). These amalgamations of art and inspiration should be a mirror to your personality, your style, the way that you live in your home. Let it form organically over time, and you’ll be thrilled with the result.

How do You Create a Gallery Wall?

There are two keys to creating a gallery wall: 1) finding the perfect pieces, 2) laying them out in an aesthetically pleasing way 3) sticking to a color story or over aching theme.

Finding your pieces

While it sounds simple to buy a collection of art at a big box retailer, it also prevents you from injecting your personality into your gallery wall. We suggest taking it slow, and accumulating pieces of art over time as you come across them. Perhaps you’ll find a vintage photograph at a flea market that lights you up, or an abstract print created by a local maker that you’d like to support. These pieces, if they are true to your taste, will mesh effortlessly.

Creating a layout

When you’re ready to hang your gallery wall, stop. Put the nails away. Instead, break out your ruler and a roll of butcher paper, and create true-to-size templates for each of your gallery wall components. Use painters tape and a level to hang these on your wall and rearrange them until you find the right layout. Once you’re happy with the way it looks, you can use these templates as guidelines for your nails (or Command strips!). Ta da! You have a stress-free gallery wall.

If you have a large wall in your home that is looking for some love, or a collection of art that you don’t know what to do with, consider creating a gallery wall. This dynamic statement will evolve over time, so it will never go out of style - and your decor will be anything but standard.
