Clean Winter Skincare Routine

With winter comes colder temperatures, frigid air - and dry skin. No matter if your skin is oily, congested, combination, or dry as the desert year round, winter in Wisconsin has a way of sucking the hydration out of your skin and introducing a host of new problems.

Over the years, we’ve transitioned to using a clean skincare routine, testing out products to see which natural formulations worked best to combat the harsh effects of winter in the Midwest without any harsh chemicals. We’ve found that we don’t have to give up great results in order to stick to our personal guidelines for healthy, safe skincare products.

If you’re looking to switch up your products for the season, try out our clean winter skincare routine.

First Step: Cleanse

At the end of the day, it’s important to cleanse your skin of any makeup that you’ve been wearing, and then again to remove any remaining dirt and grime. In the winter, we suggest choosing an oil to milk cleanser like this one from Cocokind. This formulation gently cleanses, but doesn’t strip your skin of any of that much-needed moisture. In addition to being a hydrating (yet effective!) cleanser, the Cocokind Oil to Milk Cleanser contains prebiotics in the form of fermented oat, which help balance your ph and protect your microbiome.

Second Step: Treat

Next, we address any skincare concerns you may be having. At this point in the process you can opt for a deep treatment (like a mask) or a serum that can be left on overnight to work its magic. If you’re leaning toward the former, we like the Fruit Enzyme & Vitamin C Mask from The Sunday Standard, which works to softly resurface your skin and draw out any impurities hiding in your pores. The addition of Vitamin C adds a brightening effect. If you’d like to use an overnight treatment, we’d suggest the Urb Apothecary Green Tea Hemp Face Serum which helps to reduce redness and repair damaged skin.

Third Step: Nourish

Finally, it’s imperative that you add some moisture back into your skin at the end of your routine. Use a thick moisturizer to seal in your treatment, then layer a rejuvenating oil on top to lock in your hard work. Our go-to oil is The Sunday Standard’s Night Oil, whose beautiful marigold color really adds to the overall nourishing aesthetic. This oil includes rosehip see oil, buckthorn oil, and naturally derived Vitamin A to promote cell renewal, offset free radical damage, and slow signs of aging. It’s exactly what your skin needs to not just survive but thrive in the upcoming season.

Wisconsin winters can be brutal, not only for the snow storms and slippery roads but for the havoc they can wreak on our skin. Adjusting your skincare routine to match the challenges brought on by changing weather is one of the key ways that you can keep your skin healthy and nourished day after day.
