2024 Trends we Can Get Behind

This year in 2024 its all about the Whimsy. We are seeing it everywhere and are completely here for it. Let’s take you though some fun things we’ve been seeing in the world of interiors that you might also be seeing this year at Dune in our own little way!

The Over Arching Theme: English Cottage Core

What is cottage core? Well to us it’s all about the whimsy. Adding some kitsch to your home with layers of patterns, mixing up colors, wall paper, stripes, ruffles, tiny florals, checks, bows, scallops, pops of county blue & red, primitive or rustic elements, colorful painted trim, and last but not least, animal figurines to round it all out… we are partial to the duck this year. See how it started here

Why do we like it? It feels light and playful. It feels like slowing down, it feels cozy and calming, and it feel authentically lived in.

Wall Paper is Back and Having a Moment

After the eighties wall paper seemed to cool down and it was all about the “accent” wall via the early 2000’s but now wallpaper is BACK and with a vengeance! You’re going to be seeing a lot of traditional wallpaper motifs like floral, stripes, checks, and animal motifs- fun thing about the wallpapers I’m seeing is the updated and slightly more modern take on color pallet. Playing with scale is everything with wallpaper. Mixing pattern wallpaper with pattern bedding, lamp shades, toss pillows and rugs is a huge trend. It’s all about creating those visual layers! YUM.

Ruffles, yes, on everything

Ruffles have found their way from jolly ol’ England to the USA, and we are kind of glad that they did. Ruffles on pillows, lamp shapes, window treatments, bedding, chair and sofa cover, and more. It's all about the added volume, so let’s turn it up! Adding a ruffle pillow to your sofa or bed is such a simple and easy way to enjoy this trend. We love the soft and feminine vibes of ruffles. Are you on board yet?!

Pops of Country Blue + Red

At Dune we kind of tend to stay away from red as it can be a bit jarring, poppy if you will; but in the trend of cottage core, the red POP is purposely done and adding in amongst the traditional primary color pallet of blues, greens and yellows. We are starting to come around the the red! Of course we all love blue and green and these colors tend to transition into anyones space pretty seamlessly. We are excited for the new pieces coming this spring that will help you incorporate these color trends into your own space.

Layer on the Patterns

Cottage core is not about minimalism, it’s quite the opposite. It’s time to layer on the pattern and mix and match. Now I know this is something that a lot of people are hesitant to do, it can feel daunting, like where do you even start if you want to inject some pattern play?? Here are some guide lines.

  1. Stick to a color story, keeping all your fabrics within the same set of colors

  2. A stripe or a plaid is considered a ‘neutral’

  3. Make sure to mix up the scale of the patterns, some large, some small

  4. You can never go wrong with a floral

The Color of the Year, Peach Fuzz

Patones color of the year for 2024 is “peach fuzz”, I think cottage core in the tones of peach fuzz are so beautiful and very Dune too. It’s kind of mixing the two vibes together. We love an eclectic space because as humans we are just eclectic by nature. Drawn to different things at different staged of life. So if you just can’t do the primary cottage core colors, stick to the warm earth tones!

No Boring Lamp Shades Please

If there ever was a time to add pattern to something, it’s a simple as a lamp shade. We are seeing such beautiful block printed and patterned shades this year. If you’re not a fan of adding another pillow, maybe try swapping out that plain shade for something with a little more interest. It is kind of amazing how a simple thing like a shade can give a your nook a whole new life!

Put a Bow on it

Instead of a bird, add a bow! Over the holiday season bows really made a home on trees, banisters, doors, in hair do’s, but they are not going away with Christmas! Add a bow to your pillows, curtains, candle sticks, basket handles, door knobs, hand your paintings and art from bows, velvet is the rage!

We Hope you feel a little more confident in translating some of these English Cottage Core elements into your own space this year, and when you need more help, we are here!
