Hand Written Notes + The Little Things

It has been said that a hand written notecard sent via snail mail is on the brink of extinction. Emails are easier, instantaneous, free and don’t require hunting down a mailing address. Just like we fight to save our endangered animals like the mountain gorilla and black rhino let us also put pen to paper and save the hand written notecard!

Torn spiral notebook paper stuffed into a legal sized envelope works fine. The sentiment is there but how about we put that little bit of extra thought into it with a few special touches. The first touch being your stationary choice. Embossed and personalized stationary can be found at sites like Etsy or retail stores such as Paper Source. At Dune we carry a wide variety of greeting cards for all occasions. Our cards are blank inside so plenty of room is left for your personal sentiment!

And before I forget, you don’t need a reason like a birthday, Christmas or Mother’s Day to send that special someone a note. The most cherished cards are those that turn up on a random Tuesday in between your utility bill and a Spectrum Cable flyer. Doesn’t it feel grand when a hand addressed envelope falls out of the mail pile, completely out of the blue and totally unexpected. A simple gesture to let loved ones know you were thinking about them!

How about we go a step further in our notecard sending by making them extra special with some unique flourishes. When I was a child my Aunt Becky would send cards to my brother and I with two sticks of. Juicy Fruit gum taped inside. It was such a small thing but for a seven year old kid that gum was as good as a present. And boy did that card smell good! Another sweet thing is simply to spray your card with a bit of your favorite perfume. Smells evoke memories. Some of my cherished letters from my grandma still have the faint smell of Caesars Woman perfume! If it’s a love note you are sending why not apply some lipstick and sign your card with a kiss?

Get the most out of your postage stamp and sneak a few goodies inside your card! Here at dune we always have a fun selection of stickers that are great add-ins. It can be one of our sticker sheets or our individual stickers. If you have an instax mini camera take a few, fun polaroid shots to include with your note. Other ideas are handmade bookmarks, friendship bracelets, your favorite recipe or even a tea bag. Dune carries a small selection of temporary tattoos that would be great to include in a child’s card. A beautiful and sentimental add-in could be a pressed flower from a special bouquet or a shared, favorite location. As long as your add-in is flat the options are endless!

If you would like to get your children involved in letter writing we carry a darling stationary set from Mr. Boddington specifically designed for correspondence between grandparents and grandchildren. The set includes letterhead with clever questions and writing prompts along with interactive postcards and envelopes. There is even a tic tac toe board which may, in the end, be the longest game of tic tac toeyou ever play!

Stop by the post office on your way home. Pick up a book of stamps (you will be amazed by the selection of beautiful stamps available at USPS) and get writing! Fill the card full with paragraph upon paragraph of writing or simply jot down a few sentences. Word quantity doesn’t have to matter. It is the thought and sentiment that is priority! And maybe, if you are lucky, you will be on the receiving end of a hand written card in return!
