4 Interiors Trends We’re Over in 2020

Our Pinterest feeds are changing. Over the past decade or so, we’ve seen a slow march toward minimalism, with crisp neutral color palettes and furniture with modern lines taking over our collective mindset. But, 2020 promises to be a bit more interesting. The images that are popping up on our Pinterest and Instagram inspiration boards are straying away from the “norms” that we’ve become accustomed to - and we couldn’t be more excited.

Today, we’re breaking down the trends that we’ve seen over the last few years that we can’t wait to see fall by the wayside (or simply evolve!) in 2020 and beyond.

All white everything

Though 50 shades of white has become a classic color palette loved by interiors-obsessed home owners everywhere, we’re thrilled to see color making a statement in our 2020 moodboards. Warm sepias and peaches, dramatic navys and blacks, lush greens and tropical oranges  - all of the interiors that are inspiring us this year use white as an accent instead of the main attraction.

Extreme minimalism

We get it - we love minimalism as much as the next person. There’s something about ridding your home of unnecessary clutter that can reduce your anxiety, and even promote sustainability. There is a point, though, where minimalism can become sterile, and even make your home feel cold. We’re rejecting extreme minimalism this year and leaning into elaborate gallery walls, intricate wallpaper, and over the top floral arrangements that bring our homes to life.

Unerring brand loyalty

There’s something to be said for being able to purchase an entire room’s worth of furniture, home goods, and styling pieces from one retailer. Sure, it’s convenient. It’s basically a one click design-and-go scenario. However, when you purchase everything in your home (or even one room) from one place, you end up adopting someone else’s idea of a great design instead of creating your own with pieces that tell a story for you. This year, we believe in curating your home with pieces that reflect your personal style.

Clean - to a fault

Accounts that highlight all of the many ways you can organize your home are satisfying, but they rarely reflect the realities of life. This year (and hopefully for many years to come) we’re embracing the messiness of life, the unorganized moments that have so much meaning. We’re pinning photos of living rooms in disarray, with blankets messed up on the arm of a couch, or a toys littered across a vintage rug. That’s reality, and that’s what we’re inspired by in 2020.

2020 has the potential to be a groundbreaking year for interiors, a time when we’re moving on from what has been the status quo for at least a decade and defining an entirely new sense of style. In our opinion, just as we’ve seen in fashion, it’s no longer cool to stick with what is “trendy” or “now” - it’s just plain better to create a home that feels like you, that inspires your creativity and works for your lifestyle. Here’s to letting go of some of these unrealistic trends in 2020, and relying on our guts to tell us what’s right in our homes this year.
